Cigarros eletrônicos: esses ilustres desconhecidos
Electronic cigarettes: these illustrious unknowns

Abstract
A new threat to the health of children and adolescents has arisen: electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), or electronic nicotine delivery systems. This review aimed to evaluate the different types of electronic cigarettes, their toxic effects on health, and the impact of marketing and current legislation on the use of e-cigarettes by adolescents. This non-systematic review on the use of new tobacco-releasing devices searched articles in the PubMed, BIREME/LILACS and SciELO databases over the last 10 years (2008 to 2018). The following descriptors, words and combinations were used to search for articles: vaping, electronic nicotine delivery systems, electronic cigarettes, tobacco products, e-cigarette. Even though e-cigarettes may be considered a promising harm reduction strategy, there are potential problems related to exposure to toxic substances. It is urgent and mandatory that policy and regulatory decisions impede the access of young people to e-cigarettes, and existing laws cannot continue to be ignored in most countries.
